The looting of the Iraqi museum 2003
The Iraqi Museum, one of the most important Archaeological museums in the world, suffered a major catastrophe with the attack of looters equipped with glass cutting instruments, cranes, and trucks for a period of 48 hours undeterred, on the 10th of April 2003.
This short video includes reporting and interviews with Iraqi citizens, Museum officials, and US officials.
The looting campaign did not only stop at this one museum, but museums across Iraq were emptied by looters. Archaeological sites across the country were reduced to bare grounds. It is estimated that the total area of excavated archaeological sites in Iraq looted equals the area of 3000 football fields.
